Babar Azam has returned as the captain of Pakistan in the Test format. His return marks another captaincy change for Pakistan, as he replaces Shan Masood as the skipper. Under Masood, Pakistan encountered a win rate of just 25% in the 16 Tests played by the team.

‌The Pakistan Cricket team has made another change to its captaincy. But this time it is not a change in captaincy of the white ball formats, it is about the red ball formats. The team faced a challenging time under the captaincy of Shan Masood, as they struggled to even make the matches end in a draw.
Amidst all this, the PCB announced its squad for the West Indies and England tour. One major change which the fans spotted in the squad, was Babar Azam coming to the team as a skipper. He was replaced by Shan Masood as the captain in this format back in 2023, but he returned to the same position after three years.
Pakistan didn't have a good time with Shan Masood as the captain of the team. Under his captaincy, the team went on to play 16 Test matches. Out of these, they were able to win just 4 games and lost all of the remaining 12 matches.

Our Take

The return of Babar Azam as a captain of the team will be a massive boost for Pakistan in the longest format of the game. Babar Azam led the team across 20 Tests, out of which they were only able to lose 6, and won 10 matches. The upcoming matches will be crucial for Pakistan in this World Test Championship cycle, as they have also received some deductions. For these games, an experienced captain like Babar Azam’s return gives a big boost to the team.
