ODI cricket has seen various bowlers who have dominated the game. But defending 6 runs or less in the final over is a job, where the margin of error must be zero. However, this has been done by a bowler twice for the Indian cricket team, whom we all know as a batsman.
If we talk about the greatest ODI bowlers, we will get various names such as Brett Lee, Lasith Malinga, Shoaib Akhtar, Jasprit Bumrah, Zaheer Khan, and many more. While all these bowlers have shown greatness with the ball, there are a few situations where the margin of errors must be zero, like defending 6 runs or less in the final over.
This has been done by an Indian bowler, not once, but twice in his ODI career. And it is none other than the Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar.
India vs South Africa: 1993
In the semi-final of the Hero Cup in 1993, the Indian team had to defend 6 runs for the team in the final over. He was trusted by the captain Mohammad Azharuddin, and the 20 year old paid off. He bowled some tight yorkers and even did a crucial run out, which helped the Indian team to win the game by 2 runs. Sachin Tendulkar only went on to concede 3 runs in the final over.
India vs Australia: 1996
Later in the Titan Cup in 1996, Sachin Tendulkar was able to repeat his heroics with the ball once again. In the clash against Australia, he had to defend 6 runs in the final over with one wicket in hand. He was able to strike immediately, causing a run out which allowed the Indian team to win the game by 5 runs.
These records show that Sachin Tendulkar was not just a player who dominated the game with the bat. In an era of specialist pacers and spinners, his part-time contributions proved decisive in knockout and bilateral clashes.
