New Zealand start off the T20I series against South Africa with a comfortable victory at Bay Oval. Kyle Jamieson and Mitchell Santner bowl some controlled spells which helps to restrict South Africa to a mediocre total.

Pitch and Weather

The first T20I between New Zealand and South Africa will be played at the Bay Oval. This venue is considered batting-friendly, and it also provides consistent bounce. The pacers are able to benefit early in the game, but as the batters settle, it becomes much easier for them to score runs. In the middle overs, spinners could get some grip when the pitch slows.

The weather at Mount Maunganui is expected to be clear on the match day. The temperatures will range from 15° to 22° C. There is no rain in forecast, but light dew in the evening will have an impact on the chase.

Toss

New Zealand wins the toss in the first T20I and they choose to field. Noting the pitch conditions and the dew effect, the team remains eager to utilise its batting depth.

Lineups

New Zealand: Devon Conway, Tim Robinson, Josh Clarkson, Bevon Jacobs, Cole McConchie, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner (C), Ish Sodhi, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith.

South Africa: Tony de Zorzi, Jordan Hermann, George Linde, Connor Esterhuizen, Rubin Hermann, Dian Forrester, Andile Simelane, Keshav Maharaj (C), Ottneil Baartman, Eathan Bosch, Gerald Coetzee.

Match Report

South Africa aim to start well after being asked to bat first. Tony de Zorzi and Jordan Hermann look to play well against the new ball, but Kyle Jamieson strikes early. He goes on to dismiss Hermann in the third over. Tony de Zorzi continues to score boundaries for his team, as the Proteas go on to score 40/1 in the powerplay.

Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi come in the middle overs and this is where the patience test begins. Tony de Zorzi tries to accelerate but he ends up losing his wicket to Ish Sodhi after scoring 34. George Linde and Connor Esterhuizen come up for the team at this phase, and rotate strike to keep the innings moving.

Another turning point arrives in the game, as Ben Sears gets the wicket of Esterhuizen on a short ball. This also makes the Proteas lose wickets quickly and their momentum trembles. George Linde goes on to score 29, as Mitchell Santner and Kyle Jamieson restrict South Africa to just 152/7 in 20 overs.

With the target being short, New Zealand start off with full confidence as Devon Conway goes on to bring boundaries in the powerplay. Tim Robinson also adds runs before falling prey to Gerald Coetzee. Devon Conway continues to anchor the innings as he receives support from James Neesham at the other end.

Neesham takes charge in the middle overs by hitting boundaries, which reduces the required run rate. Conway departs after scoring 47 but New Zealand remains in control. James Neesham finishes the chase strongly, as New Zealand score 155/4 in just 18.4 overs.

Player of the Match

James Neesham receives the Player of the Match award for scoring 44 runs in the chase, giving a finishing touch to help the Kiwis win the game.
