A major captaincy shakeup has happened in the Indian Premier League. After a tough season, Rishabh Pant has decided to step down as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants. This news was confirmed by Tom Moody, the Director of Cricket for LSG.

Over the last few days, it was reported that a major captaincy change is about to happen in the IPL. Fans expected that to take place in the case of Mumbai Indians, but something unexpected happened. Lucknow Super Giants have gone through a major change right before the tournament comes to an end.

The team posted on its social media announcing that Rishabh Pant has stepped down as the captain of the team. Under his captaincy, Lucknow Super Giants finished last in the standings and were not able to do well even in the IPL 2025 season. Now after a poor finish in the IPL 2026 season, Rishabh Pant has decided himself to step down as the captain.

Tom Moody, the Director of Cricket at LSG said, “Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as a captain. Our focus is now on the collective - rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards.”

Our Take

It was totally unexpected for the fans that when they would be waiting for the Qualifier 2 clash, Rishabh Pant and Lucknow Super Giants would hit them with this news. While Pant has stepped down as a captain, it remains to be seen who will be taking up his place to lead the team. LSG is having various big names, but the one who will lead the team in IPL 2027 may not be revealed anytime soon.
