This is arguably the most high-profile signing in the history of the I-League. The former PSG defender will join East Bengal as their fourth foreigner, on loan from the Indian Super League (ISL) champions Chennaiyin FC.

East Bengal played their opening I-League game, in the 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Goa, with only three foreigners in their squad. The Kolkata-based club were earlier in talks with Ebusa Dwarfs' Bright Lukman, but the striker turned down the move at the last moment.

The Red & Gold Brigade turned their attention towards Bernard Mendy, who has been a constant presence in the Chennaiyin FC defence for the last two seasons of ISL, and helped them lift the trophy, in the 3-2 win over FC Goa in the final, few weeks back.

The former French international will join the squad after completing his visa formalities, and his arrival will provide a big boost to the club's title hopes. East Bengal have struggled with their defence for a long time, and the pairing of Arnab Mondal and Bello Razaq looked vulnerable against Sporting in the opening game. Mendy is likely to replace Bello upon his arrival, and he can also be a goal threat from set-pieces.

The 34-year-old has the experience of playing in the Ligue 1 (French top division) and the English Premier League with Hull City and Bolton Wanderers. The Frenchman is also a very versatile footballer, and coach Biswajit Bhattacharya can also opt to use him in the midfield when required.
