Mourinho and Klopp urge fans to be respectful ahead of Northwest derby
Jose Mourinho has asked Manchester United and Liverpool fans to be respectful during the first Northwest derby of the season stating 'not to forget but to respect'. Last season's Europa League games were marred by chants about Munich and Hillsborough by both sets of fans.
"It's the last thing somebody should use on a football pitch because they were really big tragedies," Mourinho said in the press conference ahead of the much awaited clash between Manchester United and Liverpool.
"I will be really sad in such a big match if that is a negative point. The fans should go to enjoy (the game), to support their team, to be negative and create a better atmosphere for the opposition, but in the limits of safety and respect. I think that is going to happen."
"In football you have some football tragedies. You lose a big match or make a mistake. You can make fun of it. Human tragedy is something much more serious. It is the last thing someone should use in a football pitch. Really big tragedies are serious," Mourinho concluded.
Both clubs were charged by UEFA following their actions in the Europa League last season. They were also fined hefty amounts as their supporters mocked the tragedies and damaged seating in the stadium.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp mirrored Mourinho's statement saying that "respect is what this sport stands for" as he prepares to improve his Premier League record against United, having lost all his games to the Red Devils so far.
"We should use this opportunity on the pitch to make sure all the nice stories are written about what happens on it, and not around. Big respect is what this sport stands for and you face your biggest opponents and play football against them. That is the battle we have, that is where we should show who is the best and create a special atmosphere," Klopp told journalists during his press conference.
When asked about Wayne Rooney being dropped from the England side, Mourinho said that the United captain was ready for the game after training at Carrington.
"England is not my problem. It's good. He's prepared. He's training well, he's positive," Mourinho said.
