Real Madrid lift Super Cup title beating Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate

Real Madrid finished things off in the two-legged Supercopa tie against Barcelona with an emphatic 2-0 win at the Bernabeu. Following their 3-1 win at the Camp Nou earlier, Real remained unfazed in their approach as two goals in the first half saw them securing a convincing win over the Catalans.

Marco Asensio was at his impeccable best yet again as the 21-year-old fired a goal from way outside the 18-yard box that saw the ball dip in at the last moment allowing the Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc Andre-ter Stegen, no chance as he stood rooted to his spot.

The tempo of the game was hugely erratic following an early pressure from Real Madrid in the opening ten minutes. However, Barcelona could hardly get a touch of the ball till Real Madrid scored their second through Karim Benzema six minutes before the half time interval.

With four goals to recover from and 45 minutes to go, Barcelona could hardly think of scripting a dramatic comeback this time with Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane making sure the Catalans were not given any breathing space. Both Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez hit the wood work in the second half, which pretty much summed up the outcome of the evening.

Real Madrid were without their talismanic forward Cristian Ronaldo and they didn’t look like lacking the attacking edge for a second. Having a two-goal lead from their 3-1 away win in the first leg had given Real lesser things to worry about and their systematic display exhibited Zinedine Zidane’s master class.

Real kept 53% of the possession and had 5 shots on target with two slipping in, compared to Barcelona’s three. Barcelona saw two yellow cards for Luis Suarez and Javier Mascherano in the dying minutes of the game. La Liga starts later this week with Barcelona welcoming Real Betis and Real playing away to Deportivo.
