Brazilian legend Zico has parted ways with India Super League team FC Goa after finishing at the bottom of the table in the last edition of the tournament. The Brazilian had guided Goa to a runners-up position in the 2015 season where they were beaten by Chennaiyin FC in a controversial match.

Zico announced that he was leaving the club through his official Facebook account. The post which is in Portuguese announces the "closure" of the contract and Zico thanked everyone associated with the club for the work done over three years.

"I wanted to officially my closure of contract with fc Goa. I wanted to first of all thank the confidence placed in my work in those 3 seasons that I was the front of the team. Regardless of results, were periods of a lot of delivery and determination to do the best," the post read.

"Thank you from my heart all the affection and respect for all in Goa, not just fans and also to thank all the athletes and members of the technical committee which I have had the opportunity to work. I take this opportunity to wish you success to the FC Goa in this journey of development of the Indian football and using the words of my unforgettable friend Raul Paintings, life that follows," the translated version read.

In the first edition of the league, the 63-year-old guided the team to a second-place finish in the group stage but Goa was ousted in the semi-finals via penalties by eventual Champions Atletico de Kolkata. The second season saw them amass a record 25 points and score a record 29 goals. But they fell short of the final hurdle again when they conceded two late goals as Chennai overturned a 2-1 deficit to win the coveted trophy.

But the disappointments of last season appear to have taken their toll and the star manager has decided to call it quits. Where Goa go now remains to be seen but it would surely be a difficult task to fill the big boots that Zico has left.
