England manager Gareth Southgate is Tottenham’s first choice to succeed Mauricio Pochettino should the Argentine leave the North London club at the end of the season. The Spurs boss has struggled this season and has been linked with a move, with Manchester United and Real Madrid his top suitors.

This is not the first time that Tottenham hierarchy have enquired about Gareth Southgate, with the Daily Star reporting that the 49-year-old manager was on the club's radar last season. That was when Mauricio Pochettino raised serious concerns about starting another year as Spurs manager, even publicly admitting before the Champions League final that if the team won the trophy he could leave on a high.

These comments forced chairman Daniel Levy to seriously consider a future after Pochettino and search for potential replacements. But that was last season and Tottenham's problems this season have caused more issues for the club. The North London side have been under pressure after their sluggish start to the campaign and face Bayern Munich next in the UEFA Champions League. A poor result there may cause more problems for the North London side.

That has seen Gareth Southgate's name shoot to the top of a list of potential replacements reports the Daily Star, a list that Southgate already features on thanks to the close relationship he shares with various Tottenham start as England manager. Players like Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Harry Winks, Dele Alli and Eric Dier have reached new levels of productivity for the Three Lions under Southgate, which has seen even Manchester United consider a move for the former Middlesbrough boss.

Southgate has put immense effort into the England national team set up to make them one of the most powerful teams in the world. However, England's performances next summer could change things for Southgate, which makes the summer of 2020 very important. It will see England compete in Euros and their performance there may be a determining factor for both Tottenham and Gareth Southgate himself.
