Premier League to potentially welcome supporters from May 2021

The coronavirus pandemic has troubled the world quite a bit over the last year or so, with supporter sports affected more than most although things are slowly changing. While the Australian open and test cricket has been played in front of an audience, that hasn’t been the case for football. Especially in England with teams playing behind closed doors for the better part of the last year or so and it has affected matchday finances immensely.

Barring a three-week spell in December, when Premier League clubs were allowed to host spectators in areas of low infection rates, English football has been behind closed doors. That could be set to change after the UK government announced that sporting events will be opened once again to spectators from mid-May. But that is subject to the infection rate and should the date go ahead as planned, Premier League clubs could host 10,000 people or 25% capacity depending on which is lower.

Not only that, it could be a massive boost for Euro 2020 with England set to host seven games in the tournament including the semi-finals and the final at Wembley. Furthermore, unlike Liverpool hoisting the trophy in front of an empty Anfield, the 2020/21 season’s Champion will be able to present the title in front of supporters.
