Liverpool Aim for First Back-to-Back Premier League Titles in 41 Years

The 2025-26 Premier League kicks off with Liverpool chasing consecutive titles for the first time since 1984, spending €300 million on reinforcements including record signing Florian Wirtz. Rivals Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham also strengthened heavily, with all 20 clubs spending nearly $2 billion in the summer window.

Coming to the new Premier League season, Liverpool aim to defend their domestic crown for the first time since 1984 after winning a joint record 20th title under Arne Slot last season. The club has spent about €300 million, including a British record $156 million on Florian Wirtz, along with signings Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Hugo Ekitike. Talks are ongoing with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak.

Across the league, the 20 clubs have spent close to $2 billion this summer. Manchester City, after a trophyless 2024-25 season, have lost Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker but welcome back Ballon d’Or winner Rodri. Manchester United, coming off a 15th-place finish, invested over €200 million in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Arsenal, runners-up three years running, signed Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard for over €200 million.

Chelsea strengthened their attack with Liam Delap and Joao Pedro after winning the FIFA Club World Cup, while Tottenham, now led by Thomas Frank, rebuilt with Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel and Joao Palhinha following their Europa League triumph. Newcastle and Aston Villa also head into Europe, setting the stage for an exciting 34th Premier League season.
