At the latest international camp, Thomas Tuchel made it clear that Phil Foden does not have a guaranteed place in England’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The England boss raised concerns after Foden once again failed to replicate his club form on the international stage. Foden was deployed in an unfamiliar attacking role during England’s 1-0 friendly defeat against Japan, especially in the absence of Harry Kane.

Despite showing energy and positivity in training, Tuchel admitted that the 25-year-old struggled to make a meaningful impact during the match. A lack of regular game time at Manchester City has also affected his rhythm in recent weeks. Tuchel highlighted that Foden faces strong competition for places, particularly from players like Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Rogers.

England’s recent form has also been inconsistent, with a draw against Uruguay and just 2 defeats in 12 matches under Tuchel, though none against top 20 FIFA-ranked teams. Despite these challenges, Tuchel remains optimistic about England’s chances, insisting that recent setbacks will not define their ambition to win a major tournament for the first time since 1966.
