When the final whistle blew at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid had secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano thanks to a last gasp penalty from Kylian Mbappe in the 10th minute of stoppage time. With time running out, a reckless challenge by Nobel Mendy on Brahim Diaz inside a crowded box gave Mbappe the chance to score his 22nd league goal of the season, which he calmly converted.

Real had taken an early lead through Vinicius Junior in the 15th minute, ending his goal drought with a brilliant finish. However, Rayo responded soon after halftime when Jorge de Frutos equalised from close range. The match remained tense and open, with both sides creating chances and Real hitting the woodwork twice through Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga.

Rayo’s task became harder after red cards for Pathe Ciss and Pep Chavarria, leaving them with nine men. Despite strong resistance, they could not hold on. Real were also dealt a blow as Jude Bellingham left the field with a suspected hamstring injury.

The win reduced Barcelona’s lead to one point after 22 games, keeping Real firmly in the title race. Rayo, meanwhile, stayed 17th, just above the relegation zone, after a brave but costly performance.
