Sourav Ganguly: Kohli's Test success will put pressure on Dhoni

Speaking about Virat Kohli taking up the limited-overs' captaincy from MS Dhoni after India wrapped up of the five-match Test series against England 4-0, Sourav Ganguly said,

"While it is a justified question and I am sure Virat Kohli's Test success will put pressure on the selectors, I think Virat will have to wait (for some time). He will become the captain in ODIs too one day and it's just a matter of when. But the selectors will mull who they see as captain in the 2019 World Cup and then plan accordingly. I feel the (limited-overs) England series will be critical for Dhoni," reported AajTak.

Ganguly was also elated by the performance of team India while pointing out what England lacked during the Test series.

"It was a fantastic display by the Indian team. I hope they carry forward the momentum. In the sub-continent if you have to beat them, you need quality spinners and clearly Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali were not good enough," Ganguly spoke in a press conference earlier on Wednesday.

Analysing the incredible collapse of England on the final day, which saw them lose six wickets in the span of 15 runs after the tea break, Ganguly said, "I think that's where Virat Kohli as a captain comes in. I am sure he would have said to the boys that the match is not over yet.

"This is one of the good things we have seen in the series. These were pitches which did not have turn and we lost four tosses but still managed to win four back-to-back Test matches which is remarkable," he further added.

With wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel and rookie Karun Nair performing exceptionally well in the final two Tests, the selectors will now have a new headache when it comes to picking the starting XI in the upcoming series. But Ganguly felt that the problem will be solved when they start playing abroad.

"The batting has a lot of bench-strength available. There were guys who stood up and performed. Karun Nair was remarkable in this Test match. So it's a good problem to have. This problem will be solved in the next 12 months when India go around the world and play in conditions where there is pace and bounce," he said.

Ganguly also felt that the upcoming Test series at home against Australia will not pose much of a challenge for India.

"There are five more Test matches to come in India and they will win all five. Then they start on the road and then we will find out who stands up against good quality pace attack," Ganguly opined.

The former left-handed batsman also praised Ravindra Jadeja as one of the best bowler after the left-armer decimated England in the final Test with a seven-wicket haul in the second innings.

"He (Jadeja) is lethal on slow turning pitches in the sub-continent. I think he is one of the best,” he said.

When asked to compare between the pair of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja to the previous spin duo of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, the former skipper steered clear of comparisons.

"I don't think it's fair to compare them. Those were different eras of cricket," the 44-year old concluded.
