India vs England | England in full control after scoring 537; India off to a good start
Centuries by Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali have put England in a commanding position at the end of play of Day 2 of the first Test by scoring 537 in the first innings. India have started their first innings well with both openers getting off to good starts as India finished the day with a score of 63/0.
Brief Scores: England 537/10 (Ben Stokes 128, Joe Root 124; Ravindra Jadeja 3/86, Mohammed Shami 2/65) lead India 63/0 (Gautam Gambhir 27*, Murali Vijay 25*) by 475 runs.
England up the run-rate early on
England started the second day well with both Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes getting off to good starts with the former taking jut three ball to get to triple digits. After reaching his century, Ali upped the tempo scoring three boundaries off an Umesh Yadav over. But a few overs later, the new ball started to work its magic and Mohammed Shami sent the all-rounder packing when an out-swinger crashed into the stumps. Jonny Bairstow joined Stokes at the crease and the duo made their intentions clear early on smashing whatever the Indian bowlers could muster over the boundary line.
The home team's horrendous fielding continued on the second day as well when Wriddhiman Saha dropped Stokes at 61. The all-rounder eventually ended up with 128. On the other end, Bairstow, scoring at a brisk pace, took the partnership to 99 runs before he nicked a Shami ball to Saha, who had no intention of repeating his mistake. England ended the first session of the day on a score of 450 with the loss of six wickets with Stokes just 14 runs short of becoming the third English batsman to reach a century in the match.
Indian bowlers fight
India struck early in the second session of the day through local lad Ravindra Jadeja who sent Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid back to the pavilion for single digits. But India were unable to capitalize on the wickets as Zafar Ansari and Stokes built another 50-run partnership to take England past the 500 run mark. Stokes' scalp was finally claimed by Yadav when the former nicked a ball going down to the leg side to Saha. The wicket-keeper gobbled the catch this type safely to send Stokes back in the hut.
Ansari and Stuart Broad added another 20 runs before the former missed his attempted sweep to be caught plumb in front of his stumps off a Mishra delivery. England finished their first innings for a score of 537 as the Umpires decided to take Tea after the Ansari wicket.
India get off to a good start
Having never won a Test match after conceding 500 runs in the first innings, India got off to a decent start with both openers, Gautam Gambhir and Murali Vijay, not taking too many risks. The Indian duo let go of any risky deliveries but made it a point to punish the bad ones. With the pitch not offering too much for the pacers, Alastair Cook brought on Moeen Ali as early as the sixth over but apart from slowing down the already slow Indian run rate, the bowler didn't pose too much of a threat. India ended the day with a score of 63/0 and will look to build on the good start tomorrow.
