There are times when certain events transcend the sport itself and it was on display when players from Rising Pune Supergiant turned out against Delhi Daredevils at home wearing black armbands. The gesture was to mourn the passing away of Manoj Tiwary’s father yesterday.

Tiwary had been excellent in the match against Kings XI Punjab where he scored a fighting fifty to take his team to a respectable total. Pune relieved Tiwary of IPL duty for the Delhi game so that he could perform the last rites of his father in Bengal.

The entire team showed their support for their team-mate and as a mark of respect wore black armbands in the match against Delhi. The match, however, turned out to be a one-sided affair as Delhi secured a 97-run win over the home team. Apart from Tiwary, Pune also had to deal with the absence of captain Steve Smith, ruled out of the match due to a stomach bug.

Sanju Samson scored his maiden IPL century before a nine-ball 38 from Chris Morris took Delhi past the 200-run mark for the first time since 2012, finishing at 205. Pune, on the other hand, could only muster 108 runs in the 16.1 overs they played.
