In cricket, bad fielding is considered to be the worst possible thing that a player can do on the field. But Moeen Ali proved otherwise as his fumble, while collecting the ball, instead of costing his side runs ended up costing Australia Cameron Bancroft’s wicket in the second Test in Adelaide.

After losing the Gabba Test by 10 wickets, with both David Warner and Cameron Bancroft scoring half centuries, England started the second with the duo picking up from where they had left off in Brisbane. Despite two rain delays, Warner and Bancroft had accumulated 33 runs and looked like they were in for the long haul in the first day-night Ashes match in history.

However, the partnership came to an abrupt end when Moeen Ali’s misfielding proved to be missing element for England. The incident occurred in the 15th over with Stuart Broad bowling to Warner. The Englishman delivered the third ball of the over which the Aussie played towards the short cover where Ali was standing but the latter fumbled the ball. On seeing the same, Warner decided to take advantage of the situation and called Bancroft for a single. But it turned out to be a bad decision as the ball found its way into the hands of Chris Woakes.

Seeing Woakes with the ball in his hands, Warner changes his mind but Bancroft was already halfway down the pitch by then. Woakes had enough time to compose himself and hit the stumps with a direct hit at the bowler’s end. That proved to be the only positive on an otherwise bleak day for the English on the field as Australia entered dinner with 138/2 in 51 overs.
