Mushfiqur Rahim was hit by a bouncer behind the left ear on the fifth day of the first Test against New Zealand at Wellington, and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Tamim Iqbal confirmed that the batsman was out of any immediate danger.

A Tim Southee bouncer in the 43rd over of the second innings had struck the 28-year-old even as the batsman attempted to duck.

Mushfiqur appeared to be stunned even as he knelt at the crease in an attempt to clear his head, but the paramedics were called when it became evident that he was in some discomfort.

Both teams sent out their medical staffs to assist the player and Rahim was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

“He is fine. He spoke to us. He has been taken for precaution,’ Iqbal told Cricinfo website. The batsman had X-rays and scans to his neck and those revealed he was out of any immediate danger.

It was surprising that Mushfiqur was even out on the field considering that he had not fielded for two days due to an injury to his hand. On the last day of the match, Mushfiqur faced 53 balls, most of which were bouncers in the attempt to put pressure on him on the last day.

Mushfiqur also became the second Bangladeshi batsman to retire hurt in the Test after Imrul Kayes had to make his way back after suffering a thigh strain on the fourth day.
