Virat Kohli knew England would panic the game away
Virat Kohli asserted that he told Kedar Jadhav if they could put England under pressure the visitors would press the panic button. Kohli also described his 200-run partnership with Jadhav that set up the win as special. It was Kohli’s first match as full-time ODI captain.
The win in Pune put the hosts 1-0 up in the three-match ODI series. England put up a challenging 350/7 and put themselves in a position of control after reducing India struggling to 63/4 by the 11th over before Kohli and Jadhav turned it around.
“The moment he came to the crease, Jadhav started hitting the ball really well. I said, 'if we get to 150 here, they will press the panic button - watch',” Kohli said a post-match news conference.
Kohli scored 122 off 105 balls for his 27th ODI ton and man of the match Jadhav hit 120 in just 76 balls in a stunning, successful chase.
“Conceding 350 after being 63 for 4, their bowlers on top, it took a special partnership to get this win. It's not that we have not chased 350 but those were based on good start at the top which provided the momentum. Chasing down 350 with four quicks in their team, it was a special feeling," said Kohli, who now has the same number of hundreds (17) in the second innings as Sachin Tendulkar, but having played over a century of matches less.
England captain Eoin Morgan, said the home side didn't give them any chances in the game
"That's why we wanted to bowl first. Small ground, conditions are pretty tough for the bowlers. You think you are in the game, especially having them 60 for 4. It is tough to take, but credit to them. They didn't give us any chances. We didn't play at our best today. We think we were in the game for most of it," Morgan said.
