WATCH | Virat Kohli surprises everyone with “monster” throw
There is hardly anything that Virat Kohli does on the field that can be termed as surprising anymore. However, yesterday against New Zealand, not only did he leave his teammates surprised with a huge throw from long on, he even glanced at his own hand to understand where the power had come from.
The Indian skipper had already done his part for the team in the first innings when he scored a quickfire 26 off just 11 balls – an innings that included three huge sixes - that took India’s score past the 200-run mark. In the second innings, the bowlers did their part well as they managed to contain the Kiwi batsmen, never letting them dictate the tempo of the innings.
The incident occurred in the 19th over of the game, when the visitors required 76 runs to win off 9 deliveries. Ish Sodhi hit a Bumrah delivery down the ground, where Kohli was fielding at long on. Having to travel a long way, since he was standing slightly square of the wicket, the Indian skipper could not restrict a double, but in his attempt to do so he collected the ball and threw it with venom towards the striker’s end.
MS Dhoni had already started to make his way up to the wicket but Kohli had somehow miscalculated the distance and overshot Dhoni by a huge margin. The ball sailed over the Indian keeper and made its way towards the fielder at fine leg. As the batsmen completed an additional run, most of the Indian players couldn’t help but smile at what had just transpired.
All a smiling Kohli could do was to look down at his hand and wonder how he had managed to throw the ball so long. However, the extra run had no impact on the game as India comfortably saw off the visitors and took a 1-0 lead in the three match series.
