Sunil Gavaskar calls current side the “best India has ever produced”

After predicting that India’s limited over’s team could go down as the best ever, Sunil Gavaskar has now called the team, regardless of format, as the best that India has ever assembled. Gavaskar also opined that the team has the capability of winning India’s maiden Test series in South Africa.

The current Indian side has been in the zone for over a year now. Staring with the demolition of New Zealand, England, and Bangladesh, they went on to thrash Australia, West Indies, and Sri Lanka, in all formats of the game. The only blot in their monumental run was the Champions Trophy final defeat to Pakistan in England, which, had a few things gone their way, might have had a different result.

After beating Sri Lanka at Nagpur by an innings and 239 runs, India and Virat Kohli now stand on the brink of history as they can equal the record of most consecutive series wins set by England (1884-1891) and Australia (2005-2008). While India have had a lot of success over the last few decades, they, and many others, have never come close to securing the record. Praise has come in from all quarters and now the former Indian captain, Sunil Gavaskar, has called the current side the best that the country has ever produced.

“It is difficult to compare, depends on the opposition, playing conditions. But this is one which is right up there because of the balance they have. This team may be the best India has ever produced,” Gavaskar told NDTV in an interview.

The only skepticism about the current side is whether or not they can recreate their performances overseas. Apart from West Indies and Sri Lanka, India have not travelled to any of the major cricketing nations during their incredible run of winning eight consecutive series. But now comes the real challenge. India have never won a series in South Africa and now head to the tip of the continent with supreme confidence. Gavaskar hoped the current side would be able to take the proverbial monkey off the country’s back.

“India is firing on all cylinders. It’s batting is looking good. The bowling has got a sharp to edge to it and the fielding is outstanding. I believe India has the potential to win the series for the first time in South Africa. The crucial thing they are peaking at the right time. So I am hopeful that this time India will put one across the Proteas,” Gavaskar added.
