After being thrashed by 168 runs by India, Sri Lanka have lost the opportunity to gain direct entry to the 2019 ICC World Cup. However, it isn't all bad news for the Sri Lanka as West Indies will now have to beat Ireland before beating England by a score of 4-1 to overtake Sri Lanka in the rankings.

Sri Lanka had a great chance to book a place in the World Cup finals as they needed to just beat the Indian side just twice in the five-match series. However, after losing the first four games in a row, an a series that looks like it is heading for a whitewash, Sri Lanka are still not out of the running. If the 1996 World Champions succeed in the last match of the series which will be held on Sunday, they will attain 88 points on the points table. But, that will not be enough to get automatic qualification.

The West Indies can probably overhaul Sri Lanka given that they can also achieve 88 points and edge Sri Lanka on decimal points, if they win their forthcoming six matches, all the ODIs of a five-match series against England from September 19 to 29 and one against Ireland on 13 September.

If Sri Lanka lose the series against India 5-0, the Windies will surpass them by whipping Ireland and winning either all five matches against England or the last four matches for a 4-1 series win.

A qualifying round will take place for the teams which are not getting direct places in the 2016 ICC Cricket World Cup.

The World Cup Qualifier 2018 will have bottom four sides from the ICC ODI team rankings, the top four sides from the World Cricket League Championship and the top two sides from the World Cricket League.

The 10-team line-up for the World Cup 2019 will be completed by the top two sides from the World Cup Qualifier. The 2019 World Cup is scheduled to be held from May 30 to July 15 in the United Kingdom. The top seven ODI sides, not including hosts England, as on 30 September will qualify directly for the tournament.
