India vs Australia | Anil Kumble feels Virat Kohli is learning from experiences
Anil Kumble is of the opinion that Indian skipper Virat Kohli is constantly learning form the international matches that he is playing and leading the Indian team. The former coach also mentioned about the capabilities of the lower-order batsmen in the Australian team ahead of the Test series.
India will take on Australia in a four-match Test series starting from December 6 in Adelaide and the Indian team will go on with a mindset of winning the first-ever series Down Under in the absence of two key members of the hosts – Steve Smith and David Warner. The Virat Kohli-led side was not up to the mark in the previous two overseas Test series against South Africa and England earlier this year and according to former Test skipper Kumble, Kohli is constantly learning and the experience in South Africa and England will matter a lot for him in Australia.
“I don't think any captain or any player is a finished product. I mean you're constantly learning and I'm sure Virat is also constantly learning from all the experiences that he's had in South Africa and also in England. You spoke about the key moments, that's something he'll have to grab on the field. He needs to identify that and possibly India got a bit complacent when they picked up to 5-6 early wickets in England and then let things drift. That's something that I'm sure he would've learnt from his experience in England,” Kumble said in an interview to Cricket Next.
The Indian team has a decent bowling attack but they struggled against the lower-order batsmen in England in the five-match Test series and Kumble is of the opinion that they must be aware of the capabilities of players like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc who can swing the bat and get some crucial runs lower down the order for the home team in the Test series. Both of them average around 21 in Test cricket and can trouble the Indian bowling attack on a given day.
“Australia have some decent batting lower down, Cummins has hurt India a couple of times, Starc has hurt India. So, India is aware of the capabilities of the lower order of Australia. That's something that they wouldn't want to take for granted. As a captain you're constantly learning, the conditions are going to be different. I guess the bowling will have to be different from the way you bowl, specially with the Kookaburra ball. Between the 20th and the 60th over is where the challenge is for the Indian cricket team,” the former captain concluded.
