India vs Australia | Spectators forced to leave MCG after racist calls
Some of the spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground were forced to leave the stadium on Day 3 of the India-Australia Test series after they were caught on video using racist taunts. At the end of the third day’s play, India was leading in the Test match comfortably by 342 runs.
After several complaints by Indian spectators on the first three days of the Boxing day Test match, spectators in the Melbourne Cricket Ground(MCG)'s Bay 13 were shown the door and others were warned after racially motivated taunting of Indian players. During the first two days of the Test match, the spectators were warned for chanting phrases like “where is your visa?”, but on the third day seeing the chants continue the stadium authorities decided to walk the talk.
"Cricket Australia takes a zero-tolerance stance against any form of abuse or racial vilification at any of our matches, whether it be towards fans, players, or staff. Fans are able to report this to stadium staff or security. Victoria Police and MCG stadium security monitored the behaviour of the crowd in a section of the stadium today and evicted several fans for inappropriate behaviour. They will continue to monitor the area for remaining days of the Test,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson was reported as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Though there was another complaint by spectators for chants like “Kohli’s a wanker”, the officials deemed the chant unworthy of any warning. Earlier, on the first day of the match, Mitchell Marsh was at the receiving end of the crowd’s verbal abuse as he had replaced the local player Peter Handscomb in the Australian squad for the Boxing day match.
