WATCH | Ravichandran Ashwin tries seam bowling ahead of Centurion Test
Indian batsmen’s well-documented struggles on seaming and bouncy pitches continued in the Newlands Test where it was laid bare open repeatedly. With the next game being India’s last chance to make a comeback in the series, Ashwin, surprisingly, was seen trying seam bowling at the nets.
India’s bowling has been brilliant in the ongoing Test series against South Africa. Contrary to their top order batsmen, who crumbled like a pack of cards in both the innings, India’s pace attack has been lethal enough even for the South African skipper, Faf du Plessis, to admit that they are actually are at par with the South African bowlers.
However, it wasn’t enough for India to turn the tables on their fate as they succumbed to a familiar defeat at Newlands, failing to reach the winning mark by 72 runs. India played with four pacers and one spinner in Ashwin, in the last match. But, given how effective the seamers have been on South African tracks, it seems like Virat Kohli asked the experienced Ashwin to hit the batsmen with some seam bowling in the nets.
The right-arm off break bowler was seen bowling with a seam in the nets ahead of the second Test match in Centurion. Though his run-up was still short and simple like his bowling, he finished it much ahead of the popping crease, which was more likely to generate better pace on his delivery. Since the loss in the first Test match, critics have swarmed the Indian team like bees suggesting how to play and leave balls on the off-side, and Ashwin was seemingly asked to bowl on a similar line and length although some of his deliveries, quite understandably, went off the route.
Though South Africa have lost just twice in the 22 matches they have played in Centurion, Virat Kohli and company have been positive and confident of a strong performance in the next match. And this video pretty much hints that they are trying everything at their disposal to make things happen.
