Former spinner Muttiah Muralitharan strongly feels that Sri Lanka Cricket has no genuine concerns towards developing the sports and lacks determination. It was on these grounds that he refused to serve as a consultant to help improve the game, a position offered by Sri Lanka's Minister of Sports.

Muttiah Muralitharan has issued a statement sensationally revealing that the offer to the national players to join as a consultant for helping with the game was only a smoke screen and was deliberately planned move to utilize the good names of national reputed cricketers.

“I am of the view that it is an insincere, cunning move, more to use us when the cricket administration is in such a deplorable state and standby the sentiments that Mahela has expressed not able to trust the system as per his own experience of attempting to resolve pressing issues which was never implemented. It is sad that national cricketers are not consulted until it (the sport) hits the rock bottom. I would not hesitate to give of my time if I do realize the genuineness and credibility of the administration despite my own professional coaching engagements worldwide,” Muralitharan has said in his statement.

Sri Lankan Minister of Sports, Faizer Musthapaha, had requested to former captains like Aravinda de Silva, Roshan Mahanama, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan to join as consultants in SLC on June 14. However, the appeal was made only after there was a delay in the elections of SLC, previously going to be conducted on May 31.

“With all due respect to the Selectors and Sports Minister, I have spent one year in the Cricket Committee and six months in special advisory committee and no recommendations were implemented. I don't have any trust in the system. If anyone wants to buy time please don't use us,” Jayawardene tweeted sharing his experience.
