India vs Sri Lanka | Rohit Sharma confident India will learn from mistakes

Rohit Sharma has asserted that India will learn from their mistakes in the 1st T20I that saw Sri Lanka thrash them with a five-wicket victory to start the Nidahas Trophy on a winning note. After putting up a respectable target of 175, the Indian bowlers couldn’t stand up to Kusal Perera’s onslaught.

Despite being an under-strength side, which missed the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and more, India were widely regarded as the favourites in the tri-nation series until the first match on Tuesday. Sri Lanka’s easy victory shattered that idea as India look to bounce back in their second game against Bangladesh now.

However, deputy skipper Rohit Sharma has stated that his side will learn from the mistakes in the game, giving due credit to the Lankan batsmen who ensured victory was within reach in the first 10 overs itself.

“A lot of credit must go to Sri Lanka, to their whole batting group. I'm sure we will learn from our mistakes," said Rohit after the match, reported IANS.

R. Premadasa Stadium, where all the matches are scheduled, has been a batting pitch and India’s 175-run target, although competitive, was not sufficient enough for the bowlers to defend. Rohit admitted that India should have improved upon it, given the deep batting order the squad boast of.

“I think it was a par score, definitely something we could have defended. We could have accelerated a bit more towards the end. It was a decent wicket. We all know on a wicket like that you need your batting as strong as possible. Our squad is well equipped with plenty of all-rounders and that offers the balance to the side," he added.

However, everything said and done, India were victims of terrible bowling that eventually took the game away from them. The experienced likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Jaydev Unadkat couldn’t hold the mast steady as the newbies struggled to make an impact.

Barring Washington Sundar, who took two wickets conceding 28 runs, none of the bowlers were up to the mark. Shardul Thakur needs a special mention after he was taken to the ropes six times by Kusal Perera in his very first over, and was not brought back to attack till the batsman got out in the 13th over. Rohit, however, seemed confident that his bowlers had the experience of playing under pressure situations and would bounce back soon.

“I felt we've got enough experience in our bowling line-up. They are very much new into the scene, they have had enough experience having been in these situations before," added Rohit.
