VIDEO | Rohit Sharma tries a Virat Kohli, fails terribly

Fortune favours the bold they say and that is exactly what happened in Bangalore tonight on two separate occasions and with two different conclusions, one might say. After RCB skipper Virat Kohli got away with a close-call, MI skipper Rohit Sharma wasn’t that lucky as was given his marching orders.

The disappointments on the pitch seem to have continued for Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians as they entered a crunch tie with Kohli & Co., who have the same points tally as them. Although the team are above RCB in the points table due to a superior run-rate, they have failed to live up to their usual standards during the course of the tournament.

After having restricted the home team to a total of 167/7 after 20 overs, MI came out to chase a target with Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan at the crease. Kishan was first to depart and Kumar was caught ahead of the wickets with an lbw decision by the umpire, although the MI batsman did ask for a review which came back unsuccessful.

Next to bat, was skipper Rohit Sharma who came onto the crease with a huge task ahead of him. But it was not to be, as Yadav bowled a stunner of a delivery that caught Rohit off guard as the bottom of the bat knicked the ball before it travelled through to De Kock. Despite the fielding team’s appeal, the umpire looked unconvinced as Rohit stayed calm and unmoved by it, all the time trying to imitate Kohli's first innings stunt who got away with a similar tactic. The field official even asked Rohit, who nodded his head refusing it. However, unlike Rohit that time, Kohli actually asked for a referral.

The replays were quick to reveal that there was quite a significant contact between ball and bat as Sharma played the delivery, despite the player’s denial of the same. The video referee immediately asked the on-field umpire to give Sharma his marching orders which only added to the visiting team’s growing list of problems.

Being humiliated once by a spinner is embarrassing, but having it happen twice on the same delivery is as mortifying as it gets, as was the case for Ireland's Laura Delany in Rajkot on Friday. The batter thoroughly failed to read what Priya Mishra had dished and departed for a golden duck.

Sometimes a captain must have to take steps to ensure that he stays on the pitch long enough to ensure to see his team put up a competitive total on the scoreboard in the shortest format. That’s exactly what Virat Kohli did when he played dumb after nicking a Bumrah delivery tonight.
