Though India’s U-19 World Cup-winning captain took time to get DD’s starting eleven, he has been largely successful in holding his opening position after Gautam Gambhir stepped down from the captaincy and the starting eleven. Playing 9 matches, the Mumbai youngster has managed 245 runs this season at an average of 27.22 and strike rate of 160.

However, his last match of IPL 2018 that must have wanted to end on a high note saw disastrous consequence. Delhi had started very well garnering 30 runs in three overs with Mumbai Indians bowlers looking at a sumptuous score in the first six overs. But, out of nowhere Shaw, who was batting fluidly at 12 off eight balls, threw away his wicket as he lost his urgency while completing the run.

The incident happened on the first ball of the fourth over when Glenn Maxwell was facing Mustafizur Rahman. The off-cutter was played towards backward point by the Australian with Shaw taking a quick single. However, just before reaching the striker’s end, the youngster slowed down eyeing to stroll his way back in, assuming the throw would miss the stumps. An experienced Hardik Pandya, who had collected the ball by then didn’t make any mistake. 

While it was a lesson learned brutally by a young Shaw, history is evident that even the best and most experienced of batsmen have succumbed to callousness. India’s legendary Virender Sehwag, in a bilateral series against Sri Lanka back in 2006, was prey to a similar outcome. While taking the single, Sehwag went sloppy and was seen shadow practising the shot at mid-run when an alert Kumar Sangakkara had dismantled the bails in the meantime. Ganguly’s scream of “Viru, Viru” at the top of his lungs can still be heard.
