Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the skipper of the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup as Virat Kohli has been rested to manage excessive work-load. While Shikhar Dhawan has been selected as Rohit's deputy, Rajasthan player Khaleel Ahmed has been called up to the squad for the first time.

After leading India to victory in the Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka, Rohit Sharma will have another opportunity to showcase his credentials while leading the team during the 2018 Asia Cup. The decision to rest Kohli comes after Kohli had to play through a back pain during the third Test at Trent Bridge. And now in the absence of Kohli, Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, and Kedar Jadhav will be the fulcrum to carry India's middle-order with MS Dhoni there to help them.

Pandey, whose international career was in doubt after a disastrous IPL, was the highest run-scorer in the recently-concluded quadrangular series which featured 'A' teams from South Africa and Australia along with India A and India B. Not just with the bat, the Karnataka player shone as a leader as well in India B's victorious campaign, in which he scored 306 runs in four games with one hundred and two fifties, and remained unbeaten in all the games.

While MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik have been given a longer rope, in most baffling of decisions, the selection committee have called up Khaleel Ahmed, the 20-year-old left-arm pacer from Rajasthan, who has earned his maiden India call-up. Mayank Agarwal, however, will have to wait further despite performing brilliantly for India A.

Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan (vc), KL Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed
