India vs England | Jos Buttler has been a savior for the England team reckons Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar lavished praise on England batsman, Jos Buttler, who has performed well throughout series in the absence of some good batting from the top order in the Test series against India. Gavaskar added that the Indian bowlers did a good job against the English batsmen throughout the series.
Jos Buttler has been on an upward trajectory ever since this year’s IPL, where he took the centre stage for the Rajasthan Royals, for whom he scored 548 runs in 13 games. And he continued it in the series against India amassing a total of 349 runs in the current series Test. His latest exploits were at the Oval yesterday where he scored 89 runs in the first innings.
Former Indian Test cricketer - Sunil Gavaskar has praised the English batsman for his display against Virat Kohli & Co. for the better part of the series. Buttler came to England’s rescue once again yesterday as he took the home team’s lead to a dominating 332 runs at the end of the first innings at the Oval.
"As in the previous games, it was Jos Buttler who came to England’s rescue and with his simple method of blocking the good ball and smashing the bad ones, kept England's score ticking he good ball and smashing the bad ones, kept England's score ticking. He was happy to take a single whenever it was available knowing every run is vital and also showed confidence in the lower-order batsmen. Stuart Broad flourished in his company and they added runs at a good clip to add to India's woes," Gavaskar wrote in his column for TOI.
If Buttler performed well for the home team, then it was the Indian bowlers who starred for the visiting team across the length of the five-match Test series. He singled out Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah to praise as the duo kept the English batsmen in check in the middle overs in the ongoing fifth Test.
"Indian bowlers were magnificent once again as they kept pegging away despite a solid start from Alastair Cook, playing his last Test, and his partnership with Moeen Ali. Both got laboured half-centuries but did the job of staying at the crease.
"Then the tables turned with Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma knocking over the next six batsmen without conceding too many runs. That gave hope that the tail would be wrapped up early in the morning what with the second new ball being only three-over-old," added Gavaskar.
