Virender Sehwag said he hopes Rishabh Pant makes the best use of the time assured to him in the side to make good on the team management’s faith in him. So far, in the West Indies tour Pant’s lone significant contribution with the bat (65 not out) came three weeks ago in the third T20I.

Pant's poor shot selection has caused his downfall more often than not in his brief international career. However, the BCCI selection committee has identified him as MS Dhoni’s successor across all formats and has promised to give him ample time to settle into the role.

"Pant is an extremely talented cricketer with huge potential. It will be important that he is groomed well. And now that he has been assured some quality time in the team it is important that he makes the best use of the opportunity and works to better his game and develop as a cricketer," Sehwag told PTI.

Amidst Pant’s lacklustre performances, India has gone on a rampage in the Caribbean. After winning the T20Is 3-0 and the ODIs 2-0, India picked up their first win the ICC Test Championship with a crushing 318-run win at Antigua. The Championship runs from 2019-21, with the top two teams at the end of the period meeting for a final showdown at Lord’s.

"Two years is a long time. Yes, the team is in good hands. I wish Ravi Shastri all the luck for his second innings and Virat Kohli all the very best. We have good bench strength, quality fast bowlers and spinning prospects. We need to now settle the team combinations," Sehwag added.

Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with a five-wicket haul, complementing Ajinkya Rahane's brilliant performance with the bat in both innings – a solid 81 in the first, followed by his long-awaited 10th Test hundred in the second. The win took India to the top of the championship table with 60 points.
