Very happy to see Shubman Gill play for India, asserts Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh has revealed that he is extremely happy and excited for his fellow statesman, Shubman Gill has made his debut for the senior Indian cricket team in the recent ODI series against New Zealand. Yuvraj also spoke about the prospect of playing for Mumbai Indians in the coming IPL season.
Punjab-born youngster Shubman Gill made his debut for the limited-overs team in the recent 4-1 ODI series win against New Zealand. Even though he could only manage single digit scores of seven and nine in the last two One-Dayers against the Kiwis, Indian captain Virat Kohli is considered to be a huge fan of the hard-hitting batsman.
Gill has found himself another admirer in the form of fellow statesman and former India cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, who heaped praise on the local boys rise to stardom ever since the U-19 ODI World Cup triumph.
"I'm extremely happy for him. I was very excited to see him play for India. He has improved so much in a year's time. He came back from the India A tour, scored a lot of runs in domestic cricket, and straight away he got an opportunity (to play for India). It's good that when a guy is scoring runs, he's given the opportunity and I hope he does really well," Yuvraj told TOI in a recent interview.
Gill, who was picked up by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders in last year’s auction, had scored 728 runs in five games at an average of 104, which included two hundreds and four fifties for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy this season. His terrific form with the bat saw him called up to India A squad and then the Indian team for the tour of New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj, who scored 8701 runs in 304 ODIs for India, also spoke about his new assignment with the Mumbai Indians franchise in the coming IPL season. The World Cup winner was purchased for his base price of Rs. 1 crore and revealed that he is excited to get going under former India teammate and MI skipper - Rohit Sharma.
"I'm very fired up to play for the Mumbai Indians. I've been training every day in the nets. I'm going all guns blazing. I've been preparing well, practicing at the Reliance ground. I'm looking forward to this. I'm just making sure that my preparations are starting now, rather than just before the tournament.
"Rohit is a fantastic captain. He's got a very good cricket brain. He's been batting in the middle order for MI, and opening for India, where he's been really successful. I think that if I can contribute in the middle-order, it'll just take some weight off him and he can just go and play his natural game while opening. So we'll see how the combinations go," Yuvraj added.
