Diana Edulji has penned a letter to CoA chief Vinod Rai where she spoke about extended timelines for the appointment of a new coach as she continues to oppose WV Raman’s selection. Edulji threatened top BCCI officials will be liable to pay financial damages to the BCCI if a new contract is issued.

The Indian women’s cricket team is under the scanner after recent controversies involving veteran player Mithali Raj and Ramesh Powar grabbed headlines. Following BCCI’s decision to opt against the renewal of Powar’s contract, a committee led by World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev elected WV Raman as the next coach of the women’s team from a talented pool of applicants that included Gary Kirsten, Herschelle Gibbs, Venkatesh Prasad and Dimitri Mascarenhas.

However, Raman’s appointment still hangs in the balance as CoA committee member Diana Edulji continues to oppose the joint decision made by senior BCCI officials and CoA chief, Vinod Rai. As per TOI reports, after BCCI’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Santosh Rangnekar sent a mail to Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) asking for their approval with regards to approval of the professional fee to be given to the newly appointed coach, CoA head Rai wrote to his colleague Edulji to approve Raman’s contract. However,  Edulji’s penned a letter to reply to Rai, stating that she was against the whole process.

The former India women’s captain wants Raman to be sent to New Zealand as the interim coach of the national team, and she wants the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) to pick the new coach.

“The CEO & yourself in the past had changed/extended timelines for an individual who eventually became the head coach of men’s team, then how is it that you have suddenly found it difficult to give time to CAC which comprises of great legends the country has known (Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman) or extend the contract of the coach Ramesh Powar. Please recall the time when the men’s team went without a coach to West Indies and late Doc Sridhar was asked to be with the team, as timelines were extended and CAC was allowed to complete its process of selecting a coach.

“If the CEO, CFO and GM Cricket Operations in charge of women’s cricket do issue a new contract, then they will be liable for financial damages to the BCCI,” Edulji wrote in her mail.
