India vs Australia | Sunil Gavaskar hails fitness level of current Indian team
After India registered a historic series win in Test matches against Australia, Sunil Gavaskar has asserted that the current Indian team is at a different level in terms of fitness. He also added Steve Smith and David Warner's one year ban should not take the shine away from India's historic win.
The Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team became the first side ever in the history of Test cricket to win a series Down Under. After the last Test ended in a draw with rain playing spoilsport, the Indians registered a 2-1 win over the hosts.
The Indian players put up a great show in this month-long series and former Test opener Sunil Gavaskar hailed the fitness level of the team saying that it is the skipper himself who is showing the way.
"It is not that teams that I was a part of didn't play to win. We also played to win but this team is at a different level in terms of fitness and the captain has shown the way. In our times, we used do our individual routines," Gavaskar told PTI.
Australia went on to play against the strong Indian team without their two senior players David Warner and Steve Smith. Both of them are serving a year ban after the controversial sandpaper gate incident in South Africa last year.
"It is not India's fault that this Australian team was without David Warner and Steve Smith. Australia could have handed them shorter bans but obviously it was thought that one-year bans would be good for Australian cricket, that they needed to be made an example for anyone who brings the game into disrepute," the former captain said.
"India played the opposition they were presented with and it's a great achievement for them.”
