Sunil Gavaskar has stated that Virat Kohli winning the top three ICC awards is a proud moment for all fans, former and aspiring cricketers of India. Kohli bagged the ICC cricketer of the year, ODI cricketer of the year and Test cricketer of the year awards, first time ever by any one player.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli became the first International cricketer to win the top three International Cricket Council (ICC) awards including the most premium Sir Garfield Sobers ICC cricketer of Cricket of the year. Apart from that, Kohli won the player of the year awards in both the ODI and Test formats of the game.

"This is such a proud moment for fans of Indian cricket and former players and players aspiring to represent India. It shows when there's hard work, a player can reach the pinnacle," Gavaskar told India Today.

In 2018, Kohli scored 1202 runs in 14 ODIs at an astounding average of 133.5. In 13 Tests, Kohli scored 1322 runs including 593 in the five-Test series against England where the conditions were not really batting friendly.

"This is a massive achievement. The last one year has been tremendous for Virat Kohli. Nobody is anywhere close to Kohli."

Apart from the awards, Kohli was also declared the captain of the ICC Test and ODI teams. He led India to victories in ODI series in South Africa, T20 series in England and more recently series victories in both ODIs and Tests in Australia. Kohli also expressed his happiness over being given the awards in a video message.

"It feels amazing. It's a reward for all the hard work that you do throughout the calendar year. I feel really grateful and very, very happy with the team doing well at the same time myself performing. Having recognition at the global level from the ICC is something you feel proud of as a cricketer because you understand that there are many players playing the game," Kohli said in a video message.

The right-hander stated that such recognitions give him extra motivation to continue doing well and keep the cricketing standards above par.

"To be rewarded in this manner from amongst all of them is obviously a very proud moment for me and something that gives you more motivation to keep repeating the same things because you have to keep the standard of cricket up and keep bringing in consistent performances. From that point of view, these awards give you that extra motivation."
