VIDEO | MS Dhoni’s “dual review” on single delivery goes haywire
Even the greats have an off-day on the field and the crowd at the McLean Park in Napier was unlucky to miss out an MS Dhoni DRS special today. The former Indian skipper asked Virat Kohli to go for a review on dual grounds on a single delivery, but surprisingly, both proved to be futile.
There have been very few days on a cricket field that you would see MS Dhoni not pulling off something spectacular. Maybe with superb tactics that would befuddle the batsman or by whipping off the bails at seemingly impossible speeds to effect stumpings, Dhoni has done it all in a career that has spanned over 15 years on the international circuit. However, today was an anomaly as a DRS appeal went haywire despite India asking for a double review.
On the fourth ball of the 29th over, Mitchell Santner was completely outplayed by Kuldeep Yadav’s flighted delivery on the off-stump as he dragged himself forward but failed to connect it. Dhoni was quick to dislodge the bails after catching the ball, but the leg umpire was not interested in the appeal. Then India decided to opt for the DRS, and they asked the third umpire to check both stumpings and caught behind appeal.
Third umpire Nigel Llong, upon checking the replay, found out that Santner hadn’t dragged his foot forward, which ruled stumping out of the equation. By then, India’s only hope was the caught behind appeal, but it turned against them as well. HotSpot and RTS confirmed that there was no inside edge involved in it. The sound that deceived MS Dhoni was the ball-hitting-the-pad sound.
