India A made a strong start to the unofficial Test match against West Indies A as Shahbaz Nadeem’s five for 62 bowled the hosts out for 228 on day 1 in Antigua. After Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube broke through the top order, it was Nadeem, and Mayank Markande, who did the rest.

Brief scores: West Indies A 228 (Rahkeem Cornwall 59; Shahbaz Nadeem 5-62) lead India A 70/1 by 158 runs.

After a comprehensive 4-1 series win the 50-over format, the India A side continued their strong tour of the Caribbean with a solid day 1 performance. In reply to the 228 posted by the hosts, India A were 70 for one at stumps.

After a solid 61-run opening stand between Abhimanyu Easwaran and Priyank Panchal, Jomel Warrican had the former caught at slip for 28. Shubman Gill walked in at No.3 and smashed a six off his fourth ball to settle any nerves. Panchal, at the other end, stayed unbeaten on 31.

Earlier in the day, Windies A won the toss and opted to bat. Siraj removed both openers, while his strike-partner Dube nipped out the captain Shamarh Brooks. Then, the left-arm spin of Nadeem cleaned up the middle-order, including the important wickets off that of Roston Chase and Jermaine Blackwood.

It was Blackwood (53) and Rahkeem Cornwall (59) who offered some resistance, to lift the hosts from 97 for five, to 195 for six. However, Markande chipped away at the tail, to finish off proceedings inside 66.5 overs.
