ICC World Cup 2019 | Previous results don't matter in India-Pakistan game, says Inzamam-ul-Haq
Inzamam ul Haq, who is currently the Pakistan chief selector, has claimed that history will not account for much when India and Pakistan gear up to face each other in an epic clash in Manchester. Inzamam also added that he hopes both nations will resume their cricketing ties in the near future.
The India-Pakistan clash is undoubtedly the biggest match in the group stage of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 which is being played in England and Wales. The two neighboring countries have been at loggerheads for decades now and the existing socio-political tension between both nations only adds to the razzmatazz surrounding the mouth-watering fixture which will be played in Manchester on Sunday.
While India will surely enter the tie at a better position in rankings table as compared to rivals Pakistan, former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq warned that past results will bear no effect on today's match.
"I'm not concerned about who's won more games in the past. This game involves the emotions of both the fans and the players from both sides, which is why it's different. Wherever you go, to a mall, movie hall, restaurant, any public place, fans of both the sides will want their team to win. The player also feel that pressure. So, they tend to forget about history while playing this game.
"For example, see what happened in the Champions Trophy. In the first game, India walloped Pakistan by 124 runs. And what happened in the final was totally opposite - India lost by 180 runs. So, it's about how a team plays on the day. Previous results don't matter in an India-Pakistan game. Both the teams have great players -India have big, while Pakistan's are talented. We should be in for a great match," Inzamam-ul-Haq said in an exclusive interview TOI.
Inzamam, who is currently the chief selector of the Pakistan selection committee, further heaped praise on the likes of Indian captain and vice-captain - Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
"Virat is the No 1 batsman in the world. He's a great player. Everyone would go to watch him. I want him to score, but not tomorrow!
"I love to watch Rohit Sharma bat. He bats in an effortless manner, like he has all the time in the world. I like Babar Azam too. His strokeplay is attractive. When I watch both these batsmen, I get a feeling of having 'fun' at the ground," the former Pakistan batsman added.
