Virat Kohli has refused to take India’s next opponents Afghanistan lightly as he highlighted the importance of being professional about each game regardless of the opponent in order to win it. He went on to talk about their campaign so far and how things are in the dressing room for the team.
India have had a great start to the World Cup campaign and are so far the only unbeaten team left in the quadrennial tournament apart from New Zealand, after the match between the two nations was washed out. The Men in Blue’s next fixture is against a team with very contrasting fortunes, considering Afghanistan are yet to win a single match.
While India is running high on confidence having romped to victory against archrivals Pakistan in what turned out to be a one-sided affair for large parts of the game, Afghanistan is running low on morale. They suffered a thumping loss to hosts England who managed to break multiple records against the Asian opponents. However, Kohli insisted that the Men in Blue won’t get complacent and treat the match as any other game.
"For sure (take Afghanistan seriously). It's very difficult to gain momentum in a tournament like the World Cup. We want to win every game we play. And the fact that we have long gaps between each game, that helps a lot. We have time to recover, regroup and then the motivation is back again. No game is easy in this World Cup. We have to be professional and execute our plans well," Virat Kohli said, reported the Indian Express.
All Indian players look to be in a good space at the moment, both in terms of the performance on the field and their mental well being. The bonding amongst them off the field is being reflected in their dominating run on the pitch, something they had planned to focus on to improve harmony according to the skipper.
"Our first decision when we came here (in England) was to have a lot of fun because it's a long tournament and it's important to enjoy every day. Off the field, we find time to crack jokes even in the practice session," Kohli revealed.
Even though Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out injured, KL Rahul seems to have taken over from him without skipping a beat and all seems to be good for team India.
"We're were happy where we stand as a team. Even when we are in the dressing room, we can see each one of us are fulfilling our roles to perfection," Kohli added.
