ICC World Cup 2019 | Sometimes when you run behind wickets, you don't get wickets, says Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah thanked skipper Virat Kohli for backing him in tough circumstances as the former said that obsessing over taking wickets is not necessarily a good thing to do. The MI pacer added that Mohammed Shami’s impressive display will provide healthy competition within the Indian squad.
Virat Kohli and the rest of the Indian team had their bowling department to thank after an impressive display by pacers - Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami - at the death ensured the men in blue kept their unbeaten run intact. Bumrah held his nerve to starve the Afghan batsmen by nailing yorkers one after the other during the last overs picking up two wickets in the process.
The top-ranked ODI bowler revealed that it was the confidence placed in him by captain Virat Kohli that has helped him perform so consistently on the big stage. Bumrah added that sometimes obsessing over taking wickets is not the best thing to do.
"If the captain has so much trust in you, that gives you a lot of confidence to trust yourself and clear my head in terms of how I want to execute. We saw that wicket was getting slower and slower with the older ball, you need to be more accurate and bowl stump to stump. This is a big ground and there was reverse-swing, but you need to rely on your yorkers as well and play according to the situation. It was a tight game and I backed my skills. Sometimes when you run behind wickets, you don't get wickets," Bumrah said at the post-match conference.
Meanwhile, fellow fast-bowler Shami became the second Indian to take a World Cup hat-trick when he finished off the Afghanistan innings abruptly with wickets from three deliveries in the final over of the game. As per Bumrah, Shami's performance gives him a 'healthy competition in the side'.
"Gives us healthy competition in the side and we (bowlers) all discuss as what to do and how things are going. It's a good sign when everyone is chipping in with the wickets," Bumrah added.
