ICC World Cup 2019 | Pakistan, Afghanistan fans clash in Headingley; evicted from the stadium
After two groups of supporters ensued a fight in Headingley during the first innings of the Pakistan-Afghanistan encounter, ICC have taken strong action and evicted them from the ground. It happened after an hour into the game, with supporters throwing punches following a supposed provocation.
While a report by ANI stated that the shimmering geopolitical tensions between the two Asian neighbours and a message by an unauthorized plane created the extremely avoidable situation, ICC is currently investigating the scenario. As reported by Cricbuzz, at 9am, fans of both sides poured through the turnstiles of the stadium, with some ticketless people attempting to jump over the fence to get in.
After an hour into the game, clashes broke out between the two sets of fans in the Carnegie Pavilion Stand, but security personnel instantly intervened, and a few of the fans had to be evicted from the stadium.
As per the ANI report, the clash was apparently triggered after an aircraft, flying over the ground, displayed a 'Justice For Balochistan' message on a banner and now, the Yorkshire police have gotten into the action and have started their investigation.
"We are aware of some scuffles among a minority of fans and are currently working with the venue security team and the local police force, West Yorkshire Police, to ensure there are no further incidents. We do not condone this type of behaviour, and will take appropriate action against any anti-social behaviour that spoils the enjoyment for the majority of fans," an ICC spokesperson said.
"We work with local police forces around the country to prevent this type of incident occurring and were assured that given Headlingly is under the flight path for the Leeds Bradford Airport it would not be an issue. We do not condone any sort of political messages at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and will work with West Yorkshire police to deal with and understand why this has happened and to ensure it does not happen again," the spokesperson added about the aircraft carrying the message.
