After losing the first ODI against India, Aaron Finch has said that picking up wickets at regular intervals is important against good teams. The Aussie skipper also added that his side were 20-30 runs short while batting and with nine wickets in hand after 10 overs, they could have scored more.

India chased down the target of 237 runs even after getting reduced to 99/4 at one stage of the game. India had lost the important wickets of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and local boy Ambati Rayudu. However, it was the unbeaten 100-plus stand for the fifth wicket between Kedar Jadhav and MS Dhoni that turned things around in India’s favour as they didn’t lose a single wicket after that.

Finch, after the match, said that the bowlers tried their best but there was a need of picking up wickets at regular intervals during the Indian run-chase.

“We certainly tried our best with the ball. I think our quicks looked most effective when they were banging it in, with that came few plays and misses. You have to continue taking wickets when you are playing against good teams,” Finch said at the post-match presentation ceremony, reported Cricbuzz.

Winning the toss and batting first, Australia could only manage 236 runs in their 50 overs. After losing the wicket of Finch in the second over, they had a sensible partnership for the second between Marcus Stoinis and Usman Khawaja as they carried on till the 20th over. However, some tight bowling in the middle overs restricted the visitors for a below-par total.

“I think we were 20 or 30 runs short. Especially after we lost one wicket after 10 overs, we could have got few more runs. I thought our bowlers did an outstanding job, but they (India) were too good. Everyone's trying to score runs. It's not as if they are trying to get out,” the Australian skipper explained.
