VIDEO | Kagiso Rabada's balancing act at deep point confuses Shubman Gill to eventual run-out
While brilliant throws from the deep to run out a batsman is not a new phenomenon in cricket, it is very rare to see a fielder runs a batsman out while trying to save a boundary. It happened today as Rabada’s balancing act to save a four slowed Shubman Gill down and eventually resulted in a run-out.
After Kolkata Knight Riders suffered an early collapse, the onus was on Dinesh Karthik and Gill to sail them to a safe position, but destiny had some other plans in mind. On the first ball of the 10th over, Gill found a Sandeep Lamichhane ball on his zone and had driven it square through point.
It was going to be a sure boundary, but Kagiso Rabada was stationed at sweeper cover and ran across to point before making a full-body dive to his left. Gill and Karthik were thinking that the ball would go for a four, but they quickly ran a two, probably by seeing Rabada in full charge. Gill, however, made a mistake of slowing down a bit and during that time, the South African parried the ball to Harshal Patel, who made a throw to Lamichhane.
Gill suddenly tried to regain the momentum, but Patel was quick in his throw to the Nepal leg-spinner for a run-out attempt, making things difficult to cross the distance. The third umpire first checked Rabada’s attempt and after he deemed that the ball hadn’t crossed the line and Rabada was well in control of the things at deep point, he checked the replay for the run-out appeal. Then it was clear that Gill hadn’t grounded his bat when Lamichhane disturbed the woodwork at the non-striker’s end.
