It was very emotional hundred, I didn’t see it coming, says Jason Roy

On the back of a scintillating ton from Jason Roy, England gained an unassailable lead of 3-0 against Pakistan in the fourth ODI at Trent Bridge. Roy smashed 114, which is also his eighth ODI ton, to set the stage for a successful run-chase. 

After the century, Roy revealed that he had spent the whole night at the hospital after his seven-week-old daughter fell ill. Roy returned in the morning and could only manage a couple of hours sleep before taking the field for the fourth ODI. Although Roy’s daughter is believed to be out of danger, he returned to the hospital right after the completion of the game.   

Roy termed his century as an emotional one and he didn’t see that coming. “It was a very emotional hundred. I didn’t see it coming,” Roy told BBC Radio’s Test Match Special.

“I had a bit of a rough morning so this one is a special one for me and my family. It was my little one. We had to take her to hospital at 1:30 in the morning. I stayed there until 8:30am, came back for a couple of hours sleep and got to the ground just before warm-up and cracked on,” Roy added.

After a few hiccups in the middle, England won the game by three wickets as Ben Stokes carried the team over the line with his brilliance. Stand-in skipper Jos Buttler hailed Stokes for his heroics and said that his performance will infuse some confidence in the southpaw. 

“For Ben to soak up that pressure, come through it and be not out at the end will give him lots of confidence. It was great to see him play in that fashion,” Buttler said.
