VIDEO | Chris Woakes oversteps one delivery after umpire chalks out crease line
Coming back to bowl his second spell in the 4th innings of the fifth Ashes Test, Chris Woakes charged at Mitchell Marsh, who was batting at 6*(13), with a full-length delivery. Right after that delivery, Marais Erasmus chalked out the crease line and in the next ball, Woakes was caught overstepping.
Having bowled three overs in his first spell, Chris Woakes came back to bowl his second spell during the 31st over of England's second innings when the first delivery caught the eye of the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus who then went on to redraw the crease line on the bowler's end. The umpire must have been suspicious of Woakes' steeping on the line and to be clear for the next delivery he went on to chalk out the line that wasn't as evident after being worn out.
The next turn of event was perhaps the result of what Erasmus was scrutinizing in the first place as Woakes was caught overstepping on the line on a delivery that was first gauged to dismiss the batsman on strike, Mitchell Marsh. The delivery from the 30-year-old right-arm pacer made the length on the off-stump and Marsh looking to hit that edged it and landed into Rory Burns' hands who took a dive to his left to bag a brilliant catch. England started celebrating the dismissal as it was a supposed breakthrough for them. However, after an immediate check for no-ball, it was clear that Woakes had overstepped.
It was indeed a great delivery by Woakes, perfect line and length but he gauged his step wrong and had to pay for it. Incidentally, this was the first no-ball in Woakes' entire Test career spanning 30 matches. Marsh got a lifeline there and the umpire nailed it with the decision to mark it out.
