Angelo Mathews was in supreme touch for Sri Lanka during their first Test match against Bangladesh in Chattogram, but he fell one run short of a well-deserved double hundred on Monday. Sri Lankan players, who desperately wanted a double ton from Mathews' bat, was left disappointed after his wicket.

Sri Lanka are currently touring Bangladesh for a two-match Test series. First of them is underway, at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. After Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and opted to bat, the visitors posted 397 on the scoreboard after batting 153 overs. The mammoth total was largely due to Angelo Mathews' outstanding knock. Mathews, after coming at No. 4, hit 19 fours and one six in his impressive knock of 199 off 397 balls before he was undone by Nayeem Hasan as the last wicket.

Mathews was about to notch up a well-deserved hundred. He completed the feat once in his 95 Tests, and Sri Lankan players were sure that another would come soon. However, it did not come as he holed out to Shakib Al Hasan just one run short of 200. The Sri Lankan players, who were there at the pavilion, left stunned after the veteran's wicket, although it was a well-made inning after a long time. Mathews, too, was disappointed after throwing away his wicket, and took a slow walk back to return to the pavilion.
