ENG vs SL | Twitter stunned as Woakes inseamer leaves clueless Mathews without reply to trap him plumb

Manchester clouds and a brand new Duke's is a recipe for disaster for any batsman, no matter how experienced or talented. Angelo Mathews learned about it the hard way at Old Trafford on Wednesday after being utterly bamboozled by a Chris Woakes jaffa that resigned him to a five-ball duck.

Sri Lanka got off to a sedate start after opting to bat first in the opening Test against England before things quickly fell apart. Their openers had managed to hold fort well for the first five overs, albeit managing just six runs to show for it, but three wickets in ten deliveries comprehensively negated all the hard work. The pick of the lot for the English quicks was Angelo Mathews' departure on the last ball of the seventh over, courtesy of an absolute peach by Chris Woakes.

Mathews, having arrived earlier in the over, had little to do for the first three balls before being beaten on the outside edge by a full length ball jagging away. Woakes followed up the effort with a good length delivery on fourth stump, again presented with a wobble seam. Mathews, expecting it to seam away once more, shouldered arms confidently. However, to his horror, this time the red cherry shaped in sharply and struck him on the pads plumb in front of the stumps.

Appeal was a mere formality as was the ensuing review and Mathews ultimately had to depart for a five ball duck. Twitterati, meanwhile, showered praises on Woakes for humiliating an incredibly experienced batter in such fashion.

Good delivery

Gone for zero

Left the game

Stupid shot selections

Curse for number 4

Duck

Same old story

Misjudged

Terrible leave

Duck for him too
