Former England Captain Joe Root climbed to the top of the Men’s Test rankings list with 872 ratings, toppling Kane Williamson (859). He reached the peak position for the ninth time in his career, courtesy of a brilliant outing against West Indies in the recently concluded three-match Test series.
Root had a memorable outing in the Botham-Richard’s Trophy, amassing 291 runs in four innings at an average of 72.75. His valiant 87 in the third Test at Edgbaston and a century in the second Test at Trent Bridge were the hallmarks of his good form in the series. The 33-year-old also raced past Brian Lara’s tally of 11,953 Test runs to become the seventh-leading run-getter in the format. With 12,207 runs under his name, Root holds the record for most Test runs among active cricketers.
With the Yorkshire batter at the top of the chart, Williamson cemented the second position followed by Daryl Mitchell and Babar Azam sharing the third spot. While Steve Smith stands fifth, Rohit Sharma is up at sixth.
From the England contingent, Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson gained six and four spots to reach the 20th and 46th ranking respectively. Rookie wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith moved 31 ranks to sit at 64th position after an impressive 95 in the second Test.
