An early wicket is usually worth its weight in gold in T20 cricket, especially at high-scoring venues. Mumbai Indians duly managed to extract one at Wankhede against Kolkata Knight Riders but not before two of their players nearly let the opportunity spill in a hilarious case of miscommunication.

Mumbai Indians took the field on Thursday desperate for a win to keep themselves in the race for the knockout stages and got off to the perfect start by dismantling the highly successful opening pairing of Phil Salt and Sunil Narine in the first over itself. Sri Lankan slinga Nuwan Thushara came up trumps by deceiving his English counterpart for lack of pace but much to the hosts' horror, all hell broke loose for what should have been a routine catch.

On the fourth ball of the opening over, Salt's attempted flick ended up in a leading edge and the Kookaburra ballooned high up in the air towards point. Tilak Varma sprinted towards the deep while Naman Dhir ran in from the boundary and the two converged midway through with a calamity inevitable. However, at the last moment, Tilak somehow managed to get his hands beneath the white rock and hold on to it securely even as he collided with his teammate and the two tumbled to the ground. Naman, propped up on one knee, sat still with a grim expression thus giving the impression that the chance had gone begging, but his ploy was trumped when a giggling Tilak got off his back and turned towards his colleague. Naman frustratedly pointed to his ears, indicating Tilak should have listened to his call, but the two laughed the incident off as their teammates surrounded them in a huddle.

Twitterati was quick to comment on the hilarious catch that could well have cost Mumbai dearly.
